Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis and Recurrent Herpes Labialis in a Professional School Student Population

Abstract
For the purpose of acquring the basic data for the clinical features of recurrent aphthous stomatitis and recurrent herpes labialis, the author investigated through a questionnaire 430 dental and medical students at Seoul National University and Pusan National University during the period from October 1982 to September 1983.
The results obtained were summarized as follows:
1. In this group 41.7% of the male students and 56.1% of the female students had a history of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (p<0.05). Wherase 45.5% of the male students and 46.3% of the female students had a history of recurrent herpes labialis. No sex difference was noted.
2. 47.6% of students reported rare recurrences, 45.0% occasional and 7.4% frequent in recurrent aphthous stomatitis and 52.5% occasional, 42.9% rare and 4.5% frequent in recurrent herpes labialis(p<0.01).
3. Both diseases were characterized by 10-20 years of age of initial manifestation(more than 60% respectively, p<0.01).
4. The most frequent location in the mouth of recurrent aphthous stomatitis was labial mucosa in 43.5% followed by cheek mucosa 30.4%, tongue 15.4%, gingiva 9.5%, and palate 1.2% in decreasing order of frequency(p<0.01).
5. Significant religious difference was observed for recurrent aphthous stomatitis and no difference was for recurrent herpes labialis.
6. The responses of all students to examination and vacation periods as compared to normal school periods were increased disease activities during examination and decreased during vacations (p<0.01).
7. Knowledge of these diseases in members of the immediate family was unreliable and no historicaL background differences were observed for both conditions.
